A Fort Smith native will take area residents on a tour of maritime archeology in a presentation at 7 p.m. April 17 on the 91自拍 campus.

Lindsay Scott will present 鈥淎 Maritime Perspective鈥 as part of a meeting for the April Ark-Homa Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society and the Oklahoma Anthropological Society. It will be held in room 211 of the Math-Science Building and is free and open to the public.

The talk will be a change of pace from the usual presentations given at the meetings, which traditionally have focused on land-based archeology. Instead, Scott鈥檚 presentation analyzes aquatic archeology and what sets it apart from other branches in the field.

鈥淭he presentation will address how the maritime aspect is different from terrestrial in theory, tools, laws and locations, and will discuss the innate difficulties of the field,鈥 a summary of the talk states.

Scott will discuss her work on various projects, including Blackbeard鈥檚 Queen Anne鈥檚 Revenge in North Carolina, Captain Kidd鈥檚 Quedagh Merchant in the Dominican Republic, the SS Thomas T. Tucker in South Africa, and many others.

Tim Mulvihill, 91自拍 research station archeologist, said Scott鈥檚 talk will be an eye-opening look into the interworking of nautical archeology.

鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to hearing about some of the underwater archeological projects in which Ms. Scott has participated and seeing how data collection is handled in underwater conditions,鈥 he said.

Scott graduated from Northside High School before earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree in marketing from the Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas. She conducted her postgraduate work in the maritime studies program at East Carolina University.

The talk is hosted by the research station located at 91自拍. For more information, contact Mulvihill by telephone at 479-788-7812 or by email at tim.mulvihill@uafs.edu.
